Studying French for Express Entry is the largest single advantage available in skilled migration anywhere, and the numbers are not close. On 19 August 2026 the French-language category invited 5,000 people at CRS 382. General rounds in 2026 have been clearing roughly 500 to 530.
That is a gap of well over a hundred points, and unlike age, education or a partner’s credentials, it is available to anyone willing to spend a year on it.
The gap, in the actual draw results
| Draw | Date | Invitations | CRS cutoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| French language proficiency | 19 August 2026 | 5,000 | 382 |
| Healthcare and social services | 4 September 2026 | 3,500 | 475 |
| Canadian Experience Class | 1 September 2026 | 2,000 | 521 |
| General rounds | Through 2026 | Varies | Roughly 500 to 530 |
| Provincial nominee | Through 2026 | Varies | Above 700, because a nomination carries 600 points |
Look at what that means for a real profile. A candidate on CRS 430 is hopeless in a general round, uncompetitive for healthcare, and comfortably invited in a French draw. The same person, the same qualifications, the same age, on the strength of a language certificate.
What level you actually need
The French-language category is not occupation-based, which is the second thing that makes it unusual. Every other category asks what you do for a living. This one asks only about your French.
The requirement is a minimum of NCLC 7 in all four abilities: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Two points worth being clear about:
- All four, not an average. Strong reading does not carry weak speaking. People underprepare for the oral component because it is the hardest to practise alone.
- NCLC 7 is intermediate, not fluent. It is a real commitment, typically a year of consistent study for an English speaker starting from nothing, and it is nothing like the C1 a German medical licence demands.
Set that against the alternatives for gaining a hundred points. Another degree takes years and costs a great deal. A partner’s credentials are not within your control. Canadian work experience requires already being in Canada. French takes a year and a test fee. See how language requirements work across countries.
Two facts that invalidate most older advice
If you are working from guidance written before 2025, two things have changed underneath it and both matter more than any tip.
A job offer is worth nothing in your score
Arranged employment was removed from CRS scoring in March 2025. Before that a senior offer could carry a very large number of points, and an entire advisory industry priced job offers accordingly.
An offer still gets you a work permit and a salary. It adds zero to your Comprehensive Ranking System score. If a consultant is selling you an offer as a way to raise your ranking, they are selling something that no longer exists, and this is now one of the most common frauds in Canadian immigration. STEM is dormant
STEM remains one of the ten active categories on paper, and no dedicated STEM draw has been held since April 2024. Every guide still tells software engineers to aim at it. If that is you, French is the live route and STEM is the one to stop waiting for: see software developer jobs abroad.
The ten categories, for context
Knowing the full field helps you judge whether French is your best route or your second. For 2026 there are ten active categories:
- French language proficiency, retained, and the lowest bar in the system.
- Healthcare and social services, retained.
- Trades, retained, and holding a journeyperson certificate or Red Seal is being prioritised.
- STEM, retained but with no draw since April 2024.
- Education, retained.
- Physicians, added 8 December 2025.
- Senior managers with Canadian experience, added 18 February 2026.
- Researchers with Canadian experience, added 18 February 2026.
- Transport workers, added 18 February 2026.
- Skilled military recruits, added 18 February 2026.
Agriculture and agri-food was removed for 2026. And every renewed category now requires 12 months of qualifying work experience, up from six, which is the change most likely to catch someone who was nearly eligible last year.
What to do
- Work out your current CRS score honestly. If it is below 480, a general round is not going to invite you.
- Check whether you are in a live category other than French. Healthcare, trades and physicians are all being drawn from.
- If not, start French, and plan for all four abilities. NCLC 7 across the board, with the oral component as the part to practise deliberately.
- Book the test with a real date. A year of study without a booked examination tends to become two.
- Do not buy a job offer. It adds nothing to your score and has not since March 2025.
