Software Developer Jobs Abroad: Easiest Tech Visas 2026

Almost every guide to software developer jobs abroad tells developers to target Canada’s STEM category. Worth knowing before you plan a year around it: STEM is still an active Express Entry category, and IRCC has not held a dedicated STEM draw since April 2024.

Meanwhile Germany will issue an EU Blue Card to a developer with no degree whatsoever, and hardly anybody mentions it. So this ranking is by who you are rather than by country, because a self-taught engineer and a computer science graduate are looking at two different lists.

If you have no degree: Germany, and it is not close

Under Section 18g of the German Residence Act, an IT specialist can hold an EU Blue Card without an academic qualification. The conditions are specific and checkable:

    • Three years of professional IT experience gained within the past seven years.
    • The experience must be at a level comparable to a university graduate’s, and must be a genuine requirement of the role you are being hired into.
    • A gross salary of at least EUR 45,934.20, which is the reduced Blue Card rate rather than the standard EUR 50,700.
    • Approval from the Federal Employment Agency, which typically adds two to four weeks.

Read that again if you came up through a bootcamp, a support desk or your own projects. There is no other major economy that will issue a skilled-migration card to a developer on experience alone at that salary level. The documentation is the work: employer references, payslips and project descriptions covering three years inside the seven-year window, and the seven-year part matters if you have had a career break.

One trap to avoid. The contract has to state a fixed annual gross salary that clears the threshold. Bonuses, equity, sign-on payments and variable commission do not count, which catches people at startups where half the package is upside. Full thresholds in our country-by-country Blue Card table, and the wider picture in work visas that need no degree.

If you have a degree and want the shortest process

RouteWhat you needWhy a developer picks it
Netherlands, highly skilled migrantEUR 5,942 a month, or EUR 4,754 if you graduated within three yearsThe fastest mainstream route in Europe. English-language workplaces are normal, and the graduate rate is genuinely low
Germany, EU Blue CardEUR 50,700, or EUR 45,934.20 on the reduced rateThe largest tech labour market in Europe, and the reduced rate covers shortage occupations and recent graduates
Australia, Skills in DemandAUD 79,423 and an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation ListStrong salaries, but the visa charge is AUD 4,015 for you and AUD 4,015 again for each adult dependant
United Kingdom, Skilled WorkerGBP 41,700 and a degree-level roleDeep market, but the health surcharge is GBP 1,035 per person per year on top
Poland, Lithuania, PortugalConsiderably lower thresholdsUnderrated. English-language engineering work exists, the employer usually pays the permit, and the cost of living gap is doing a lot of work

The Dutch route has one condition worth checking before you apply for anything: your employer has to be an IND recognised sponsor. That is a public register, published and updated monthly, holding 12,883 organisations as of 1 July 2026. Use it as a prospect list rather than a verification step, which is the approach in finding companies that sponsor. Detail on the route itself is in the Dutch salary thresholds and the scheme guide.

What is actually happening with Canada

Canada is still the best destination on this list if you want permanent residence rather than a work permit. But the way in has moved, and developers are the group most likely to be working from stale advice.

There are ten active categories for 2026. Five were retained from 2025: French language, healthcare and social services, trades, STEM and education. Physicians were added on 8 December 2025, and senior managers, researchers, transport workers and skilled military recruits on 18 February 2026. Agriculture and agri-food was removed.

Three things follow for a software engineer:

    1. STEM exists on paper. No dedicated STEM draw has been held since April 2024. Treat it as dormant and plan around something else rather than waiting.
    2. French is the open door. The 19 August 2026 draw invited 5,000 people at CRS 382, against general rounds clearing 500 to 530. For a developer in the 400s, a year of French is worth more than any other single move.
    3. The experience requirement doubled. Every renewed category now needs 12 months of qualifying work experience, up from six.

And the fact that invalidates most of what is still written about this: a job offer no longer adds CRS points. Arranged employment came out of the scoring in March 2025. If a consultant is pricing an offer as a way to raise your score, they are selling something that does not exist. See the 2026 category draws in full.

    The mistake developers make

Tech is the one field where people apply to the country with the biggest salaries and are surprised to be competing with everyone else who did the same. The routes with the least competition are the ones with the least name recognition, and the work is often the same work: the Netherlands, Poland, Lithuania and Portugal all run English-language engineering teams for European clients.

The second mistake is treating the salary threshold as the target. It is a floor, not a market rate, and clearing it by a small margin in an expensive city is worse than clearing a lower one comfortably somewhere cheaper. Compare 15 European routes side by side before narrowing to one.

    What to do this week

    1. If you have no degree, assemble the three-years-in-seven evidence for Germany: references, payslips, project scope. That file is the application.
    2. If you have a degree, check the Dutch graduate rate first. EUR 4,754 a month within three years of graduating is the lowest realistic bar in western Europe.
    3. If Canada is the goal, pick a live category and work backwards. For most developers that means French, not STEM.
    4. Check the register before the vacancy. In the Netherlands and the UK, whether an employer can sponsor is a public fact you can look up in a minute.
    5. Get the contract wording right. Fixed gross salary, stated annually, clearing the threshold on its own without bonus or equity.

Last checked September 2026. Thresholds are revised annually, Express Entry categories are set each year and draws are announced individually. Confirm with the national immigration authority before acting.
