Advice on how to immigrate to Canada dates faster than almost any other immigration subject, and two changes have invalidated most of what is still published. A job offer is now worth zero points. And there is no single queue any more: there are ten categories, and which one you fit matters more than your score.
Get those two right and the rest of the system is navigable.
A job offer adds nothing to your score
On 25 March 2025 IRCC removed the points for arranged employment from the Comprehensive Ranking System. Before that a senior offer could carry a very large number of points, and an entire advisory industry priced job offers accordingly.
An offer still gets you a work permit and a salary. It adds nothing to your ranking. If a consultant is selling you a job offer as a way to raise your CRS, they are selling something that no longer exists, and this is now among the most common frauds aimed at Canadian applicants.
Ten categories, and the one that matters most
Express Entry now invites from categories rather than from one pool. There are ten active for 2026, and the difference between them is not marginal:

Work through what that means for a real profile. Someone on CRS 430 is hopeless in a general round and comfortably invited in a French draw. Same person, same qualifications, on the strength of a language certificate. For most people short of the general cutoff, a year of French is worth more than any other single action available.
The full ten: French language, healthcare and social services, trades, STEM and education, all retained from 2025; physicians, added 8 December 2025; and senior managers, researchers, transport workers and skilled military recruits, added 18 February 2026. Two traps in that list. STEM is dormant: it is active on paper and no dedicated STEM draw has been held since April 2024, so software engineers waiting for one are waiting for something unscheduled. And every renewed category now requires 12 months of qualifying experience, up from six, which catches people who were nearly eligible last year.
How the score is actually built
Worth setting out correctly, because the maximums are widely misreported:

The 600 in the fifth row is the largest single movement available to you. A provincial nomination is not a boost, it is effectively a decision: nomination-only rounds clear above 700 precisely because everyone in them holds the 600. If you have one you are close to invited, and if you do not, no amount of language testing catches up with someone who does.
TEER, and why your job classification matters
Canada classifies every occupation by TEER level, 0 to 5, under the National Occupational Classification. This replaced the older Skill Type 0, A and B structure in November 2022, and it is not a relabelling:
- TEER 0: management occupations.
- TEER 1: professional roles usually needing a university degree.
- TEER 2 and 3: roles needing a college diploma, apprenticeship or substantial experience, including most skilled trades.
- TEER 4 and 5: roles needing secondary school or short on-the-job training.
It decides more than eligibility. Since 21 January 2025, whether your partner can get an open work permit turns on your TEER level: generally TEER 0 or 1, or a defined set in TEER 2 or 3. Bringing a family is now a question about your job classification. See in-demand Canadian careers and pathways.
If you are in a trade
Canada held its first dedicated trades category draw in April 2026, prioritising holders of a journeyperson certificate or a Red Seal endorsement. That converts a trade certificate from a licensing convenience into an immigration asset.
Red Seal sets a national standard across 56 designated trades, and most provinces let an experienced foreign-trained worker challenge the exam directly rather than repeating an apprenticeship. That is usually the fastest route to Canadian recognition: see the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
What it costs, and one route that closed
Canada is cheap by comparison: a work permit is CAD 155 with CAD 85 for biometrics. Australia charges AUD 4,015 per adult applicant for the equivalent, which is worth remembering when you compare destinations.
One piece of dead advice to discard: the Agri-Food Pilot closed to new applications on 14 May 2025. Agricultural workers should look at agriculture streams within Provincial Nominee Programs and at the Rural Community Immigration Pilot instead.
What to do
- Find your NOC code and TEER level. Everything, including whether your partner can work, follows from it.
- Work out which category you are in before you calculate a score. The category decides the bar.
- If you are short, learn French. CRS 382 against 500 to 530 is not a close comparison.
- Look seriously at provincial nomination. 600 points is the largest lever in the system.
- Do not buy a job offer. It has been worth zero points since March 2025.
