The language requirements for a work visa question has a new answer in the UK. On 8 January 2026 the Skilled Worker English requirement rose from CEFR B1 to B2, and it went largely unremarked. If you were preparing to a B1 standard, you are preparing for last year’s rule.
More usefully: across the world the language requirement is one of three completely different things, and most people prepare for the wrong one.
Three kinds of language requirement
| Type | What it means | Where |
|---|---|---|
| A gate | No certificate, no visa. There is nothing to trade against it | United Kingdom at B2, Japan at JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 |
| Points | It buys you score rather than permission, and can be substituted for by other strengths | Canada, South Korea, Austria’s Red-White-Red Card |
| Deferred | Nothing at entry, and then everything later, at settlement or for a professional licence | The German EU Blue Card, and most European skilled routes |
The mistake is symmetrical. People bound for the UK underprepare, because B2 is genuinely a step up and there is no way around it. People bound for Germany overprepare for entry and then find the real requirement waiting at the settlement stage, which is where they needed it all along.
The UK: B2 since January, and B2 for settlement from 2027
For applications made on or after 8 January 2026, the default requirement on the Skilled Worker route is B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. It also applies to the Scale-up and High Potential Individual routes, and it catches new applications from overseas as well as people already in the UK switching into these routes or extending.
B2 is roughly A-level standard against B1’s GCSE, so it is a real increase rather than a relabelling. Four things soften it:
- If you held the visa before 8 January 2026, B1 still applies when you extend. You do not need to retest.
- Nationals of majority English-speaking countries are exempt, including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland.
- A degree taught in English from an approved institution is also an exemption, and it is the most commonly overlooked one.
- Healthcare applicants are usually already above it. OET Grade B or IELTS Academic 7.0, which regulators typically require, sits comfortably beyond the visa threshold.
One more date to put in your plan: the English requirement for settlement across most routes rises from B1 to B2 on 26 March 2027. If you are on a five-year path to settlement, that lands inside it. See the UK Skilled Worker route and the Health and Care Worker visa.
Germany: nothing now, a lot later
The EU Blue Card asks for no German at all to enter, which is why so many people arrive with none. The bill comes at two later points and both are significant.
Settlement
A Blue Card holder can apply for a settlement permit after 21 months with B1 German, or 27 months with A1. A1 is mandatory either way, so there is no version of German permanent residence without some German, and the clock starts when the Blue Card is issued rather than on arrival.
Read that as an offer rather than an obstacle: six months of permanent residence, bought with the difference between A1 and B1. Very few immigration systems price language that generously, and the courses are often free. See free German language courses for visa holders.
Professional licensing, which is much harder
For regulated professions the requirement is on a different scale. Medical Approbation needs general German at B2 and professional German at C1, demonstrated through the Fachsprachprufung, a medical language examination set by the regional medical association and focused on patient conversation and clinical handover. That is the requirement, not the Blue Card’s zero. Detail in countries that need doctors.
Where language is worth points instead
In points-based systems language is currency, and the exchange rate is often better than people realise.
- Canada. The French-language category invited 5,000 people at CRS 382 on 19 August 2026, against general rounds clearing 500 to 530. That is the single largest return on language study available anywhere in skilled migration.
- South Korea. Korean ability feeds the E-7-4 points total alongside salary, tenure and certifications, with a threshold typically around 60 points.
- Austria. German counts towards the Red-White-Red points total, and the job seeker version of it requires 70 points to be granted at all.
- Turkey. The Turquoise Card requires Turkish at A2, with greater fluency scoring higher during selection.
The Canadian figure deserves emphasis because of what it implies. If your CRS is in the 400s, a year of French is worth more than any other single thing you can do, including a further degree. Detail in the 2026 category draws and the Turkish Turquoise Card.
Japan, where the test is the whole gate
Japan’s Specified Skilled Worker route asks for no degree and no qualification recognition, which removes the barrier that stops trades workers across Europe. In exchange, the tests are absolute: a skills test for your field and Japanese at JFT-Basic or JLPT N4. Nursing care adds a further Japanese test on top.
There is no substitution, no exemption for experience and no points to make up the difference. For most people N4 is six months to a year of steady study, and it is the entire price of entry to a status that can renew indefinitely. See the Specified Skilled Worker guide.
What to do
- Find out which of the three kinds you face. A gate needs a certificate before anything else; points can wait; deferred requirements should be planned for anyway.
- If the UK, prepare to B2, and check the exemptions first. A degree taught in English may already cover you.
- If you already hold a UK visa, you extend on B1. Do not buy a test you do not need.
- If Germany, start at A1 immediately. It is mandatory for settlement and B1 saves you six months.
- If Canada and your score is short, learn French. The numbers are not close.
- Take the exam the authority names. A general certificate is not interchangeable with a professional one, and a medical language exam is a different qualification entirely.
