The French category is the lowest bar in the system by a very large margin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at what that means for a real profile. A candidate on CRS 430 is hopeless in a general round, uncompetitive for healthcare, and <strong>comfortably invited in a French draw<\/strong>. The same person, the same qualifications, the same age, on the strength of a language certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_level_you_actually_need\"><\/span><strong>What level you actually need<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French-language category is <strong>not occupation-based<\/strong>, which is the second thing that makes it unusual. Every other category asks what you do for a living. This one asks only about your French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The requirement is a minimum of <strong>NCLC 7 in all four abilities<\/strong>: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Two points worth being clear about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>All four, not an average.<\/strong> Strong reading does not carry weak speaking. People underprepare for the oral component because it is the hardest to practise alone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NCLC 7 is intermediate, not fluent.<\/strong> It is a real commitment, typically a year of consistent study for an English speaker starting from nothing, and it is nothing like the C1 a German medical licence demands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set that against the alternatives for gaining a hundred points. Another degree takes years and costs a great deal. A partner&#8217;s credentials are not within your control. Canadian work experience requires already being in Canada. French takes a year and a test fee. It adds <strong>zero<\/strong> to your Comprehensive Ranking System score. If a consultant is selling you an offer as a way to raise your ranking, they are selling something that no longer exists, and this is now one of the most common frauds in Canadian immigration. Detail in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/blog\/canada-express-entry-category-based-draws-2026\/\">the 2026 category draws<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"STEM_is_dormant\"><\/span><strong>STEM is dormant<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">STEM remains one of the ten active categories on paper, and <strong>no dedicated STEM draw has been held since April 2024<\/strong>. For 2026 there are ten active categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>French language proficiency<\/strong>, retained, and the lowest bar in the system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Healthcare and social services<\/strong>, retained.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trades<\/strong>, retained, and holding a journeyperson certificate or Red Seal is being prioritised.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>STEM<\/strong>, retained but with no draw since April 2024.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Education<\/strong>, retained.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Physicians<\/strong>, added 8 December 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Senior managers with Canadian experience<\/strong>, added 18 February 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Researchers with Canadian experience<\/strong>, added 18 February 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transport workers<\/strong>, added 18 February 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skilled military recruits<\/strong>, added 18 February 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agriculture and agri-food was <strong>removed<\/strong> for 2026. And every renewed category now requires <strong>12 months<\/strong> of qualifying work experience, up from six, which is the change most likely to catch someone who was nearly eligible last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do\"><\/span><strong>What to do<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Work out your current CRS score honestly.<\/strong> If it is below 480, a general round is not going to invite you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check whether you are in a live category<\/strong> other than French.
