A question like “why does the company need someone from abroad?” is not an invitation to sell yourself. It is a test of whether you understand the basis on which you are being sponsored. The strong answer is factual: the occupation, whether it is on a shortage list, and the specific skill or qualification the employer could not find locally.

The answers that fail

Four patterns account for most avoidable refusals, and every one of them is a good-faith answer from a genuine applicant.

Vagueness about your own job

“I will be working in construction” or “in IT” is the single most damaging answer available, because it is exactly what someone with a fabricated offer would say. Know your job title, your occupation code, your salary, your start date, your working location, and who you report to. If you cannot name your manager, ask before the interview.

Numbers that do not match the paperwork

A salary quoted from memory that differs from the certificate, or a start date a month out, reads as a rehearsed story rather than a real one. Re-read the application before you attend, and quote from it rather than from recollection.

Not knowing what the visa allows

On most sponsored routes your permission is tied to that employer, and changing jobs means a new application. An applicant who says they plan to look around once they arrive has described a breach of the conditions, whatever they meant. Know the boundaries and say them plainly.

Mentioning a fee you paid

This one ends interviews. On every legitimate route the employer carries the sponsorship cost. If you say you paid an agent for the job offer, you have described either a fraud you are the victim of or an arrangement that is not what it claims. If you have paid such a fee, get advice before the interview rather than discovering the problem inside it. Our guide to what visa sponsorship is sets out who pays for what.

What to have ready, on paper

Bring the documents even when you are told they are unnecessary.
