A family of four on a five year Skilled Worker visa pays <strong>GBP 1,035 x 4 x 5<\/strong>, which is <strong>GBP 20,700<\/strong>, before a single application fee. On the Health and Care Worker visa that figure is nothing. It is the largest single saving available anywhere in UK immigration, and it is why establishing your eligibility is the first thing to do rather than the last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_one_you_need\"><\/span><strong>Which one you need<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eligibility for the Health and Care Worker visa turns on two things at once, and you need both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your occupation<\/strong> must be on the eligible list. It is decided by the occupation code on your certificate of sponsorship, not by your job title. Doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, pharmacists, physiotherapists, radiographers and the other allied health professions are in scope.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Your sponsor<\/strong> must be an NHS body, an organisation providing services to the NHS, or a provider regulated by the Care Quality Commission. A private clinic outside that definition cannot use this route even for a nurse.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If either fails, you are on the general <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/blog\/the-uk-skilled-worker-visa-how-to-apply\/\">Skilled Worker visa<\/a> with its GBP 41,700 floor. Full detail of the cheaper route is in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/blog\/how-to-apply-for-the-healthcare-worker-visa\/\">our Health and Care Worker visa guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Care_workers_the_route_closed_but_not_for_everyone\"><\/span><strong>Care workers: the route closed, but not for everyone<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On <strong>22 July 2025<\/strong> the UK closed the care worker and senior care worker occupations to <strong>new overseas applicants<\/strong>. Two groups are unaffected, and the difference between them and everyone else is now the most important fact in this field:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nurses, doctors and allied health professionals.<\/strong> Never affected. The route is fully open to them, and anyone telling a registered nurse that the UK is closed is wrong.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Care workers already in the UK.<\/strong> Existing holders can extend and switch sponsor until 22 July 2028, and providers can still recruit care workers already in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That second group is larger than people realise, and it includes a lot of people whose employer collapsed or lost its licence. Which is where Scotland comes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Scotlands_scheme_for_care_workers_who_lost_sponsorship\"><\/span><strong>Scotland&#8217;s scheme for care workers who lost sponsorship<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scottish Government runs the <strong>Adult Social Care Displaced Workers Scheme<\/strong>, backed by <strong>GBP 500,000<\/strong>, and it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/news\/delivering-on-social-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reopened to new applications<\/a>. It has already helped <strong>37 employers recruit 120 workers<\/strong>, with 138 expressions of interest received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be precise about what it is, because the headlines are easy to misread. It is <strong>not a route into the UK<\/strong>. It pays the extra costs a Scottish employer faces when hiring a worker <strong>already in the UK<\/strong> who has lost their employer&#8217;s sponsorship, against a vacancy they cannot otherwise fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>If you are<\/th><th>Does the scheme help?<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>A care worker in the UK who lost sponsorship<\/td><td><strong>Yes.<\/strong> This is exactly who it exists for.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A care worker overseas hoping to come to Scotland<\/td><td><strong>No.<\/strong> The visa route closed in July 2025 and this scheme does not reopen it.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>A nurse or allied health professional, anywhere<\/td><td>Not needed. The Health and Care Worker visa is open to you.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption>Who the Adult Social Care Displaced Workers Scheme is for.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It sits inside a wider commitment to add up to <strong>45,000 extra hours of care a month<\/strong>. First Minister John Swinney has framed it as mitigating two UK decisions: excluding dependants from care visa applications in March 2024, and closing the social care route entirely in July 2025. If you are in the affected group, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sssc.uk.com\/news\/https-news-sssc-uk-com-news-adult-social-care-displaced-worker-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the SSSC publishes the employer facing detail<\/a> and it is worth sending to a prospective employer who has not heard of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_this_might_diverge_further\"><\/span><strong>Why this might diverge further<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immigration is reserved to Westminster, so Scotland cannot create a visa. It can and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/news\/visa-proposals-to-support-scotlands-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published proposals<\/a>, and Business Minister Tom Arthur has set out three:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A Scottish Visa<\/strong>, tailored to Scottish labour market needs rather than UK-wide averages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A Rural Visa<\/strong>, proposed as a five year pilot across three to five rural and island communities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A Scottish Graduate Visa<\/strong>, giving international graduates two further years to work, bridging the existing graduate route and a Skilled Worker visa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>None of these exists.<\/strong> They are proposals to the UK Government, and nobody can apply for one. They matter as a signal rather than a route: the pressure for regional variation is coming from an ageing and in places declining population, and the closure of the care route is the example Scottish ministers keep citing. If you are planning several years ahead, it is worth watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do\"><\/span><strong>What to do<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Check your occupation code against the Health and Care Worker list first.<\/strong> If it is there and your sponsor qualifies, the general route is a costly mistake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If you are a care worker already in the UK<\/strong>, look at the Scottish scheme and at the transitional rules running to 22 July 2028. You have more options than the headlines suggest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If you hold a nursing qualification you have never registered<\/strong>, register it.
