That is it. Recognition of an equivalent foreign qualification serves the same purpose.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Run your own electrical firm<\/td><td>A <strong>Meisterbrief<\/strong>, or you must employ a qualified Meister as the registered Betriebsleiter. Electrical installation is an <strong>Anlage A<\/strong> trade under the Handwerksordnung, which is the list of crafts you cannot trade in without one.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption>The employed and self-employed thresholds for electrical work in Germany.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if your plan is to arrive and work for a company, the bar is lower than the internet suggests. If your plan is to arrive and set up on your own, the bar is a full further qualification and you should know that before you buy a plane ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For what it is worth, the Meisterbrief is reported to be worth somewhere between <strong>EUR 10,000 and EUR 20,000 a year<\/strong> in additional earnings, on top of the right to trade and to take on apprentices. It is a long qualification but not a pointless one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_a_foreign_qualification_gets_recognised\"><\/span><strong>How a foreign qualification gets recognised<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EU qualifications are recognised automatically. Everything else goes through a formal assessment by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.handwerkskammer.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Handwerkskammer<\/a>, the Chamber of Crafts, or by the IHK depending on the trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The part worth knowing is what happens when your training does not line up exactly, which for most applicants it will not. Germany does not simply refuse. It offers <strong>compensation measures<\/strong>, and there are two:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>An aptitude test<\/strong>, which is the fast route if your practical experience is strong.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A supervised adaptation period of up to three years<\/strong>, after which you receive full recognition. You are working and being paid during it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three years sounds daunting until you notice that you spend it employed in Germany rather than waiting at home. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anerkennung-in-deutschland.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The official recognition portal<\/a> will tell you which applies to your own qualification, and it is worth starting before you look for an employer, not after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_electricians_are_formally_short\"><\/span><strong>Where electricians are formally short<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Country<\/th><th>Position<\/th><th>What it changes<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Lithuania<\/td><td>Four electrical classifications on the list<\/td><td>Removes the work permit and the labour market test entirely. The code decides it, not the job title.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Austria<\/td><td>Electrical trades on the 2026 shortage list<\/td><td>No labour market test, and high-voltage (Starkstrom) specialists are treated as a priority profile. You still need 55 of 90 points.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Germany<\/td><td>A bottleneck trade<\/td><td>Electrical and heating trades are among the most affected. A recognised vocational qualification opens any qualified job since November 2023.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Poland<\/td><td>On the shortage occupations list<\/td><td>Electricians appear alongside the other construction trades, and employers are used to sponsoring.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption>Countries listing electricians as a shortage occupation in 2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lithuania is worth spelling out because its list works by occupation code, and there are four separate electrical entries. It is a separate classification from general electrical work and it is in demand across Europe for reasons that are not going away.
