The UK closed its care worker route to new overseas applicants on <strong>22 July 2025<\/strong>. Canada&#8217;s home care worker pilots stop accepting new applications on <strong>31 March 2026<\/strong> and do not reopen until 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between them those were the two destinations most care workers were aiming at. If someone is currently offering to arrange either, they are selling you something that does not exist. Two things survive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>People already in the UK.<\/strong> Existing holders can extend and can switch sponsor until 22 July 2028, and providers can still recruit care workers already in the country who need a new sponsor. If you are in the UK, you are inside a door that closed behind you and you have real options.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nurses, who were never affected.<\/strong> The Health and Care Worker visa remains open to registered nurses, doctors and allied health professionals. If you are a qualified nurse being told the UK is closed, you are being told something false.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That second point matters more than it sounds. A great many people described as care workers hold a nursing qualification from home that has never been registered abroad. Registering it changes which door you are standing at. Canada announced two home care worker pilots offering <strong>permanent residence on arrival<\/strong>, which was a genuine and generous change from the old requirement to work in Canada first. They opened on 31 March 2025 with a one year application window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That window closes on <strong>31 March 2026<\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/services\/immigrate-canada\/caregivers\/home-care-worker-immigration-pilots.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no new applications will be accepted<\/a> until 30 March 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a second limitation that was there from the start. The pilots require applicants to be <strong>already working in Canada with valid work authorisation<\/strong>. A caregiver outside Canada could not apply directly even while the window was open. Any agent who offered to place you into it from abroad was describing something that was never available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_care_work_is_still_genuinely_open\"><\/span><strong>Where care work is still genuinely open<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Country<\/th><th>Route<\/th><th>What it requires<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Germany<\/td><td>Skilled worker route<\/td><td>Geriatric and elderly care are bottleneck occupations. You need a recognised vocational qualification, assessed by the federal state you will work in, plus German. This is the most open of the remaining options and the most work up front.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Japan<\/td><td>Specified Skilled Worker, nursing care<\/td><td>Three exams: the care skills test, JFT-Basic or JLPT N4, and a separate Nursing Care Japanese Test. No qualification needed, which makes it the only route here open to someone with none.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Austria<\/td><td>Red White Red Card, shortage occupation<\/td><td>Nursing assistants are on the 2026 shortage list, so no labour market test. You still need 55 points of 90, and German carries 25 of them.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Ireland<\/td><td>General Employment Permit, healthcare assistant<\/td><td>Healthcare assistants have been eligible, subject to quota and to a labour market test. Check current quota before committing.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption>Care work routes still open to applicants from abroad in 2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Japan deserves a closer look than it usually gets from care workers, because it is the only one of these that does not ask for a qualification at all. It tests you instead. The catch is the language: care work is the one Specified Skilled Worker field with a third Japanese exam, precisely because the job depends on understanding what a patient tells you. Note too that nursing care sits outside the renewable tier of that visa, because Japan has a separate long term care visa for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_avoid_losing_money_on_this\"><\/span><strong>How to avoid losing money on this<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Care work attracts more recruitment fraud than any other shortage occupation, and the closures above will make it worse rather than better, because demand for the route has not fallen just because the route has. Four checks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>If anyone offers a UK care worker visa, stop.<\/strong> The route closed in July 2025. There is no version of this that is legitimate unless you are already in the UK.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If anyone offers a Canadian caregiver placement from abroad, stop.<\/strong> That was never possible, and applications close entirely on 31 March 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Never pay for a job offer.<\/strong> In every country listed above the employer applies and the employer pays.
