On <strong>22 July 2025<\/strong> the UK raised the minimum skill level for a Skilled Worker visa to degree level, and around 180 occupations stopped qualifying overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is that several countries never asked for a degree in the first place, and they are not the ones people expect. What an immigration system is trying to establish is that you can do a job the country is short of, at a standard it recognises. Countries that do not use a degree as the proxy use one of three others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A recognised vocational qualification.<\/strong> Germany and Austria both work this way. An apprenticeship or trade certificate counts, provided a national body agrees it is equivalent to theirs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>An exam you sit.<\/strong> Japan does this. No qualification at all is required; you pass a skills test and a language test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The occupation itself.<\/strong> Lithuania and Canada&#8217;s trades routes care what the job is, not what you studied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In every case the work has moved rather than disappeared. You are swapping three years at a university for a recognition process or an exam, which is faster and cheaper but not free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_routes_that_do_not_need_a_degree\"><\/span><strong>The routes that do not need a degree<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Country<\/th><th>Route<\/th><th>What it wants instead of a degree<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Japan<\/td><td>Specified Skilled Worker<\/td><td>Two exams: a sector skills evaluation test and either JFT-Basic or JLPT N4. Open in 16 fields, and 11 of them now lead to a status you can renew indefinitely.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Germany<\/td><td>Skilled worker route<\/td><td>A recognised vocational qualification of at least two years. Since November 2023 that opens any qualified job, not only shortage occupations.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Austria<\/td><td>Red White Red Card, shortage occupation<\/td><td>A vocational qualification scores 30 of the 90 points, and you need 55. Trades dominate the shortage list.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Lithuania<\/td><td>Shortage occupations list<\/td><td>Nothing but the right occupation. The list is overwhelmingly construction and industry, and being on it removes the work permit entirely.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Canada<\/td><td>Express Entry, trades category<\/td><td>A year of experience in an eligible trade. Invited through a category draw rather than a general one.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption>Work visa routes that do not require a degree, 2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lithuania is the most underrated of these and the least written about. Of the 162 entries on its shortage list, the overwhelming majority are construction and industrial trades: welders, pipe fitters, machine operators, carpenters, electricians, plumbers. If you hold one of those trades, that is the shortest paperwork trail in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_left_of_the_UK\"><\/span><strong>What is left of the UK<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not nothing, but not much, and it has an expiry date. Jobs below degree level can still be sponsored if the occupation appears on one of two lists:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Immigration Salary List<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Temporary Shortage List<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both are <strong>scheduled to lapse on 31 December 2026<\/strong>, and the government has reserved the right to bring that date forward. So this is a closing window rather than a route, and planning a multi year move around it would be unwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are transitional rules worth knowing if they apply to you. Anyone already sponsored in a job below degree level before 22 July 2025 can still extend and can still change employer within that skill level, provided their residence stays continuous. If that is you, you are inside a door that has shut behind you, and it is worth understanding your position properly rather than assuming the new rules apply. The rules are the easy part. The hard part is recognition, and it runs on its own timetable regardless of how quickly your visa could be issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germany assesses regulated professions state by state, so approval in one federal state does not carry to another. Japan holds its skills tests on fixed dates in a limited number of countries, so your start date is set by an exam calendar. Austria wants your qualification formally compared before the points mean anything. None of that begins until you begin it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the order that works is: pick the country, start the recognition or book the exam, and look for the employer while that runs. Doing it the other way round produces an offer you cannot take.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_one_to_pick\"><\/span><strong>Which one to pick<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>If you hold a trade certificate<\/strong>, look at Germany, Austria and Lithuania. All three are built for you and two of them waive the labour market test.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If you hold no formal qualification at all<\/strong>, Japan is the only one of these that will still take you, because it tests you rather than your paperwork.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If you are already in Canada<\/strong>, the trades category is the most direct route to permanent residence on this list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If you were counting on the UK<\/strong>, check the two lists and check the date.
