The labour market needs test is the employer&#8217;s step, it takes weeks, and it is where General Employment Permit applications stall. The Critical Skills route has none, which is why a listed occupation is worth pursuing even at a higher salary floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_actually_on_the_list\"><\/span><strong>What is actually on the list<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For manufacturing, the list is an engineering and science list. These occupations appear on it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Engineers<\/strong>: civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, production, biomedical and environmental.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Project engineers<\/strong>, which matters because the title is common in pharmaceutical and medical device plants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scientists<\/strong>: biochemists and medical laboratory scientists among them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demand behind it is real and concentrated: Ireland&#8217;s pharmaceutical, medical device and food production plants are among the largest in Europe relative to the population, and they hire engineers faster than Irish universities produce them. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.gov.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Department of Enterprise publishes the current list<\/a> and reviews it at least once a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"And_what_is_not_despite_what_you_will_read\"><\/span><strong>And what is not, despite what you will read<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These roles are not on the Critical Skills list, whatever a recruitment site tells you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Production and process technicians<\/strong>, including biopharma process roles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Machinists<\/strong>, including CNC.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quality control inspectors<\/strong> and line supervisors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>General trades<\/strong>: electricians, plumbers, carpenters and welders. Employers routinely assume all skilled trades qualify. They do not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the most common expensive mistake on Irish applications, and it is usually made by the employer rather than the applicant. If a recruiter tells you your technician role is a Critical Skills role, ask them for the occupation as it appears on the published list. Three things to know about it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The labour market needs test is the employer&#8217;s job.<\/strong> They advertise, they wait, they evidence it. Ask early whether they have done it before, because a first-timer is slower.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The 50:50 rule applies.<\/strong> Irish employers generally must have at least half their staff from the EEA, so a very small firm may be unable to sponsor you regardless of willingness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Residency comes at five years<\/strong>, not two. That is the real cost of the difference, and it is worth knowing before you accept rather than after.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Care work sits lower again, at EUR 32,691 and a minimum EUR 16.12 an hour, covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/blog\/a-guide-to-the-ireland-healthcare-assistant-permit\/\">the healthcare assistant permit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_roadmap_and_why_applying_sooner_is_cheaper\"><\/span><strong>The roadmap, and why applying sooner is cheaper<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 1 March 2026 increases were the first step of a published roadmap running to <strong>2030<\/strong>. Ireland set it out in advance deliberately, so employers and applicants could plan, and you should plan against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two practical consequences. The floor you clear this year is lower than the one you will face in two.
