Nurses qualify for a visa that is <strong>exempt from the immigration health surcharge entirely<\/strong>, and a great many apply on the general route instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sort that out first. A family of four on a five-year visa pays <strong>GBP 1,035 x 4 x 5<\/strong>, which is <strong>GBP 20,700<\/strong>, on the general route and <strong>nothing<\/strong> on the health route. Add a salary floor GBP 16,700 lower and it is not a close comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One condition decides eligibility, and it is about the employer rather than about you: your sponsor must be an <strong>NHS body<\/strong>, an organisation providing services to the NHS, or a provider regulated by the <strong>Care Quality Commission<\/strong>. A private clinic outside that definition cannot use this route even to hire a nurse. It moves you from a closed route to an open, cheaper one. See <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/blog\/care-worker-jobs-abroad-2026\/\">what is actually open to care workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_find_the_employers\"><\/span><strong>Where to find the employers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no need for a curated list, because the Home Office publishes the definitive one. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/register-of-licensed-sponsors-workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The register of licensed sponsors<\/a> is free and downloadable, and it holds around 100,000 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two ways to use it, and the second is the one most people miss:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Defensively.<\/strong> If an employer is not on the register they cannot sponsor you, whatever they have told you. One minute, and it eliminates every fake offer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>As a prospect list.<\/strong> Filter it to healthcare and to your region, then approach those employers directly whether or not they are advertising. They hold a licence, they have done the paperwork before, and they have already decided sponsoring is worth it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For nursing specifically the pool is wider than NHS trusts: independent hospital groups, care groups regulated by the CQC, agencies supplying NHS services, hospices and community providers all appear. We keep a working copy at <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/registered-uk-visa-sponsors\">registered UK visa sponsors<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"NMC_registration_is_the_long_pole_not_the_visa\"><\/span><strong>NMC registration is the long pole, not the visa<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visa is the fast part. Registration with the <strong>Nursing and Midwifery Council<\/strong> is the slow one, it runs on its own timetable, and no employer can hire you until it is done or under way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start it before you start job hunting, not after an offer. That single sequencing decision is the difference between a move measured in months and one measured in a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One piece of good news on language. The English requirement rose to <strong>CEFR B2<\/strong> for applications made on or after <strong>8 January 2026<\/strong>, but <strong>OET Grade B or IELTS Academic 7.0<\/strong>, which the NMC typically requires anyway, sits comfortably above the visa threshold. Meet your regulator&#8217;s standard and you have already cleared the immigration one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_in_order\"><\/span><strong>What to do, in order<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Start NMC registration now.<\/strong> Everything else waits for it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confirm the employer qualifies for the health route<\/strong>: NHS body, NHS service provider, or CQC regulated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check they are on the register<\/strong> of licensed sponsors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apply on the Health and Care Worker visa<\/strong>, not the general route.
