Before that a senior offer could carry a very large number of points, and an entire advisory industry priced job offers accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An offer still gets you a work permit and a salary. It adds <strong>nothing<\/strong> to your ranking. If a consultant is selling you a job offer as a way to raise your CRS, they are selling something that no longer exists, and this is now among the most common frauds aimed at Canadian applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ten_categories_and_the_one_that_matters_most\"><\/span><strong>Ten categories, and the one that matters most<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Express Entry now invites from categories rather than from one pool. The French category is the lowest bar in the system by a very wide margin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work through what that means for a real profile. Someone on CRS 430 is hopeless in a general round and <strong>comfortably invited in a French draw<\/strong>. Same person, same qualifications, on the strength of a language certificate. For most people short of the general cutoff, a year of French is worth more than any other single action available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The full ten: French language, healthcare and social services, trades, STEM and education, all retained from 2025; physicians, added 8 December 2025; and senior managers, researchers, transport workers and skilled military recruits, added 18 February 2026. Agriculture and agri-food was <strong>removed<\/strong>. Detail in <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/blog\/canada-express-entry-category-based-draws-2026\/\">the 2026 category draws<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two traps in that list. <strong>STEM is dormant<\/strong>: it is active on paper and no dedicated STEM draw has been held since April 2024, so software engineers waiting for one are waiting for something unscheduled. And every renewed category now requires <strong>12 months<\/strong> of qualifying experience, up from six, which catches people who were nearly eligible last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_the_score_is_actually_built\"><\/span><strong>How the score is actually built<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worth setting out correctly, because the maximums are widely misreported:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><thead><tr><th>Section<\/th><th>Maximum<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Core human capital<\/strong>: age, education, official language ability and Canadian work experience<\/td><td><strong>500<\/strong>, or 460 if a spouse comes with you<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Education, within that core total<\/td><td>150. PhD 150, master&#8217;s 135, bachelor&#8217;s 120, diploma 90, secondary school 28<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Spouse or partner factors<\/td><td>40, and only if they accompany you<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Skill transferability<\/td><td>100<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Additional points<\/strong>, where a provincial nomination sits<\/td><td><strong>600<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Total<\/td><td>Capped at 1,200<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><figcaption>The Comprehensive Ranking System, 2026.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 600 in the fifth row is the largest single movement available to you. A <strong>provincial nomination<\/strong> is not a boost, it is effectively a decision: nomination-only rounds clear above 700 precisely because everyone in them holds the 600. If you have one you are close to invited, and if you do not, no amount of language testing catches up with someone who does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TEER_and_why_your_job_classification_matters\"><\/span><strong>TEER, and why your job classification matters<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada classifies every occupation by <strong>TEER level<\/strong>, 0 to 5, under the National Occupational Classification. This replaced the older Skill Type 0, A and B structure in November 2022, and it is not a relabelling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>TEER 0<\/strong>: management occupations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TEER 1<\/strong>: professional roles usually needing a university degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TEER 2 and 3<\/strong>: roles needing a college diploma, apprenticeship or substantial experience, including most skilled trades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TEER 4 and 5<\/strong>: roles needing secondary school or short on-the-job training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It decides more than eligibility. Since <strong>21 January 2025<\/strong>, whether your partner can get an open work permit turns on your TEER level: generally TEER 0 or 1, or a defined set in TEER 2 or 3. Bringing a family is now a question about your job classification. See <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/blog\/shortage-jobs-in-canada-in-demand-careers-and-immigration-pathways-for-2024\/\">in-demand Canadian careers and pathways<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_you_are_in_a_trade\"><\/span><strong>If you are in a trade<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada held its <strong>first dedicated trades category draw in April 2026<\/strong>, prioritising holders of a journeyperson certificate or a <strong>Red Seal<\/strong> endorsement. That converts a trade certificate from a licensing convenience into an immigration asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Red Seal sets a national standard across 56 designated trades, and most provinces let an experienced foreign-trained worker <strong>challenge the exam directly<\/strong> rather than repeating an apprenticeship. That is usually the fastest route to Canadian recognition: see <a href=\"https:\/\/shortagejobs.com\/blog\/the-federal-skilled-trades-programfstp-for-canada\/\">the Federal Skilled Trades Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_it_costs_and_one_route_that_closed\"><\/span><strong>What it costs, and one route that closed<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canada is cheap by comparison: a work permit is <strong>CAD 155<\/strong> with <strong>CAD 85<\/strong> for biometrics. Australia charges AUD 4,015 per adult applicant for the equivalent, which is worth remembering when you compare destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One piece of dead advice to discard: the <strong>Agri-Food Pilot<\/strong> closed to new applications on <strong>14 May 2025<\/strong>. Agricultural workers should look at agriculture streams within Provincial Nominee Programs and at the Rural Community Immigration Pilot instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do\"><\/span><strong>What to do<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Find your NOC code and TEER level.<\/strong> Everything, including whether your partner can work, follows from it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Work out which category you are in<\/strong> before you calculate a score.
