That splits readers of this page into two groups facing completely different processes.

If you hold

What you need

An EU, EEA or EFTA passport

No work permit at all. You may travel to Iceland and start work. If you are in the second, the rest of this page is the process, and it is genuinely harder than the adverts suggest.

The permit route for non-EEA applicants

Iceland offers four tracks to a residence permit based on work. Which one applies is decided by the job, not by you:

Shortage of labour. This is the fish processing route, and the one this page is about.

Expert knowledge, for roles requiring a university qualification.

Athletes.

Work under a collaboration or service contract.

The shortage of labour track exists precisely because Iceland cannot staff its fishing industry domestically, and fishing roles are treated as shortage occupations with streamlined processing. That is the good news. The condition attached to it is the obstacle.

The labour market test, which your employer has to pass

Before a permit can be granted, the employer must satisfy Vinnumalastofnun, the Directorate of Labour, that the position could not be filled by someone already in the EEA or EFTA labour market. The vacancy has to be advertised through the VMST registration system and left open for a reasonable period with no suitable candidate coming forward.

Read that as what it is. You are not competing with other Icelanders. You are competing with every worker in thirty countries who can take the job without any paperwork at all. This is why an employer who is genuinely willing to sponsor is worth a great deal, and why most are not.

The application itself goes to the Directorate of Immigration. Reported figures put the fee at around ISK 15,000 and the permit ladder at one year, then two, then unlimited after three years of continuous residence. Confirm both officially before budgeting.

The seasonal route, which is the realistic one

There is a second door and it is wider. Iceland issues seasonal permits for fish processing of up to six months, which matches how the industry actually works: the catch is seasonal, the processing peaks with it, and the labour demand is sharpest for a defined stretch of the year.

The trade-offs are the usual seasonal ones, and worth being clear about: it is short, it is tied to one employer, and it does not accumulate towards residence by itself. What it does give you is a legal Icelandic work history and a reference from an Icelandic employer, which is what makes the next application easier. People who convert seasonal fish processing into something longer almost always do it by being asked back.

The same pattern runs through European seasonal work generally: see 11 countries offering seasonal work visas in Europe and the UK seasonal worker visa.

What the job pays, and why the number is fixed

This is where Iceland differs from almost everywhere else on this site, and it is strongly in your favour.

Pay and conditions must meet or exceed the applicable Icelandic collective agreement. That is not a guideline. It is the legal floor for the permit, and it applies to the job rather than to you, so a foreign worker and an Icelandic worker doing the same shift are on the same agreement.

Entry-level fish processing, 2026

Gross monthly pay

ISK 483,000 to 498,000 under collective agreement

On top of that

Overtime and bonuses, which in this industry are substantial during a peak season

Set by

The collective agreement, not by the employer

What an offer below it means

Not a poor deal. A non-compliant one, and a permit should not be granted on it

Pay for entry-level fish processing work in Iceland.

So the practical check is simple and it is different from the one you would run anywhere else: rather than asking whether the salary is competitive, ask which collective agreement covers the role, and whether the offer meets it. An employer who cannot answer that is either not serious or not compliant.

The work itself

Worth being honest about, because the pay and the accessibility are real and so is the job. Fish processing is cold, wet, physical and fast, on shifts that follow the catch rather than an office calendar. Roles include filleting and trimming, packing and freezing, quality control, machine operation and cold store work.

What it asks of you is stamina and consistency rather than qualifications, and little English and no Icelandic for most positions, because the work is hands-on and the crews are already international. That combination is rare, and it is why these roles are worth knowing about even if the seasonal length puts you off at first.

What to do

Check your passport first. An EEA or EFTA passport means no permit and no labour market test. Nothing else on this page applies to you.

If you are outside the EEA, target employers who have sponsored before. The labour market test is the barrier, and an employer who has cleared it once knows how.

Ask which collective agreement covers the role and check the offer against it. This is the single most useful question you can ask an Icelandic employer.

Consider the seasonal permit rather than holding out for a year-round contract.
